  • WEEK ONE – The first week of study will revolve around a basic introduction to the craft of stand-up comedy. This is for those just beginning open mic performances or who have yet to make it on stage. It is followed by a discussion of different writing exercises and how one can best develop material for his or her own act. This class will require students to perform a portion of their act or if they have never been on stage, begin to develop material for the next week’s class.

  • WEEK TWO – This class will continue the study of writing exercises and demonstrate ways to create a character or characters the student can use to develop a “stage persona”. This class will also teach basic stage performing and ways to best “use the stage” for their performances. We will also study the fundamental rules for being an emcee or host of a comedy club.

  • WEEK THREE – This class will require students to perform a five minute portion of their act using stage presence, callbacks and other devices covered in the first two weeks. Students in this class will be encouraged to give feedback and begin critical analysis of one another’s act. This section will also teach ways to build an act from the opening remarks to the closing joke. This week will cover the tools one needs for the construction of a full, complete stand-up set.

  • WEEK FOUR – This class will require students to perform a separate five minute portion of their act with emphasis on connecting it to the previous weeks performance using the segue tools taught in week three. This class will conclude with a discussion on the basic workings of the comedy industry and what is required of performers to find work in the industry.

  • FOLLOW UP CLASS – A final meeting before the showcase performance to allow students to ask questions and seek opinions of their act from their fellow students and the instructor. No new instruction will be offered during this meeting, as this is a voluntary class.

REQUIREMENTS OF STUDENTS – All students should attend class with a notebook and pen. All students should be prepared to perform in front of the class and share ideas and opinions. This class is meant to be an interactive experience; students should come prepared to hear things about their act and share opinions of others in a constructive and creative manner. At the end of each class, time will be allotted for students to seek the opinion of their fellow students and the instructor on certain jokes or topics for jokes.

A specific sign-up space on the Laff Stop open-mic performers list will be made available to students, as long as they continue to use it for NEW material or performance enhancements. Failure to comply may result in loss of sign up privileges. Failure to obey the time rules for performers may also result in loss of this privilege. Each student is STRONGLY encouraged to make use of the open-mic available on Monday nights at the Laff Stop.

All students will be allowed to perform on the final showcase performance held at the Laff Stop. The length of each performance will depend on the number of students participating, but it will allow for at least ten minutes and not to exceed twenty. One student will be selected by the class as the “headliner” of the showcase and will be allotted at least twenty minutes and will perform last.

All students will be provided with tickets to the showcase that they may either sell at face value or give away to friends and family.

The final goal of this class is to give each student the tools they need to develop a twenty-minute stand-up comedy routine, using material written and conceived by themselves and for their own act. At the end of the four-week session certain students may not achieve that goal, but they will have the skills to do it in time.
